Jason Haley style, a rough guide to creating a development and blogging suite on Windows XP Professional x64.

Interesting how some apps have the x64 tag appended to them but are just 32 bit apps which will run on XP x64. Also how some apps seem to be 32-bit but then generate a 64-bit process (well that’s at least how Process Explorer appears to work) and my AV program runs as both 32-bit and 64-bit at the same time.

Windows Media Player 11 x64 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c6a4cecb-9cb2-42f7-8814-7cb5067ee958&displaylang=en is a 32 bit application built to live happily on Windows XP x64. It isn’t a 64-bit application. Only Vista x64 has an actual 64 bit version of Windows Media Player installed on it and even then the default is to use the 32bit version also installed on it for codec compatibility reasons. However, 64bit codec packages are coming through beta even now and there’s a guide on how to make the 64bit version the default here on mydigitallife.info. Note that the K-Lite codec pack is 32 bit therefore. http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/01/19/switch-change-or-set-64-bit-windows-media-player-11-wmp11-in-windows-vista-x64-as-default/
